 and founders of Leadership Shelby County knew that deeply in 1995 when this program was founded. At the time of our program's creation, Shelby County looked immensely different than it does today. Poorly laid plans led to a season of economic instability and the county was on the brink of bankruptcy. A group of seasoned leaders came together to bridge the gap between the community and the policymakers, passing legislation that helped Shelby County recover. Years passed, responsible growth occured with intentional leadership, and Shelby County is now leading the state in categories like education, home value, and health. Shelby County's success did not happen in a vaccum, nor did it happen overnight. It happened with a collective group of leaders who saw the potential of a place, even when the outlook was grim. Since 1995, Leadership Shelby County has been informing, empowering, and inspiring our county's leaders by exposing them to the issues that matter and equipping them with the tools to enact real change.
