Youth Program

Youth Leadership Shelby County is designed to encourage young people to be socially conscientious leaders of the future by providing them with the experience, vision and opportunity to lead. The program is offered to students entering the eleventh grade in Shelby County and Hoover City public schools.

Selection Process
A selection committee from Leadership Shelby County will review nominations and submitted essays. Thirty srtudents will be selected to participate in the program.

Application Checklist
• Request an application from your school counselor.
• Complete the application, have it signed and return it to: Youth Leadership    Shelby County, Station 6007 University of Montevallo, Montevallo, AL 35115
• Give one reference form to a teacher, counselor or principal at your school. Give    the second one to an adult who knows you well, other than a parent or relative.

Eligibility
High schools may nominate as many candidates as they wish, provided each candidate meets the minimum criteria for nomination.

Minimum Criteria for Nomination
• Apply at beginning of junior year
• Have a minimum 3.0 grade point average
• Be involved in some type of extracurricular activity or service in the community    or church
• Be alcohol, tobacco, and drug free
• Commit to 100% attendance at all sessions
• Letter of recommendation from school/community leader

Youth Leadership meets one day each month, December through March, 8:00am - 3:00pm. Scheduled class days are recognized as excused absences by the Shelby County Board of Education and Hoover City Schools Board. Graduation will be held in April.
